Ireland's u-17s played out a nil-nil draw
with England at Clevedon Town's ground last night in the annual
friendly International Tournament. This was a very exciting game
between two well matched teams and played on a very difficult pitch.
Ireland suffered a major blow seven minutes into the game when Emma
Reilly had to retire with a suspected broken toe. She was replaced
by Stephaine Roche which resulted in a reshuffling of personnel,
Noelle Murray dropped back into midfield, where she had a super game
out of position. There were chances created at both ends, the best
of which fell to Michelle Glynn, Jennifer Critchely and Stephaine
Roche for the Irish, and English striker EllenWhite brought out a
great save from Michelle Byrne in the Irish goal.
The 2nd half saw much of the same with
Christina Byrne coming closest for Ireland with a free kick from
just outside the box. This was a very physical game fought out
fairly by both teams.
Yesterday's match was an excellent
team performance with some very good individual performances. Capt
Lynnmarie Grant and her back four colleagues, Catriona McGilp,
Christina Byrne and Catriona Connellan worked as a very tight unit
throughout the 80 minutes. Paula Murray on the left had an
outstanding game while Rebecca Creagh and Noelle Murray battled
manfully in the centre of midfield.
Ireland now face a very
diffcult task tonight with a game against Holland without key
players Emma Reilly, Michelle Glynn and Catriona
Connellan.
Manager Marie Price Bolger stated that she was
very pleased with the team performance last night. "The girls showed
real courage and commitment against England and with a little more
patience in front of goal we could have taken all three points. The
game was a huge learning curve for the players and now we must do it
all over again tonight, when we play
Holland".
