Hibs U15 Girls 0 : Falkirk U15 girls 1
played at St Augustines, Edinburgh on Saturday 6th May 2006.
A bright and pleasant morning saw Hibs take on Falkirk in the semi-final of the
League Cup.
The game quickly settled into a tense affair with both teams fighting for every
ball. Most of the play was
concentrated in midfield.
Falkirk broke the deadlock when a long ball from defence found Laura, with just
a suspicion of offside, who calmly slotted past the keeper to give the visitors
a 1-0 lead.
Hibs fought back shortly after and a great run from Gemma almost forced an
opening for Laura in the Hibs attack.
Falkirk upped the pace however and the Hibs defence had to be on their guard as
Falkirk surged forward with increasing pressure.
The few Hibs attacks were repelled by the strong Falkirk defence and Hibs
seemed devoid of ideas in the latter part of the first half.
They nevertheless held out with some good defending from Mariel, Charlotte,
Coral and Rebekah at the back with Danni, Rosie and Gillian coming back from
midfield. Just before halftime Hibs
almost snatched an equaliser when Rosie put Gemma through and her cross found
Laura who shot just over the bar.
Halftime : Hibs 0 Falkirk 1
Hibs were quickly on the attack in the second half with Gemma and Emma racing
forward with some good passing play but the final shot went past the post.
Good play on the right from Bryony forced a corner then Emma was put through by
Gemma but shot narrowly wide. It certainly seemed a different Hibs side from the
first half as they mounted a series of attacks on the Falkirk defence.
Falkirk were always dangerous however and Laura in the Hibs goal had to be on
top form to save from close range.
At the other end Gemma was unlucky not to score with a neat shot whilst Laura
came close after a great run from Mariel.
Falkirk came close to doubling their lead with 10 minutes to go as Hibs
continued to press for an equaliser. Hibs still had to be on their toes and
required good defending from Ashley and Rebekah.
Hibs forced a corner in the dying minutes and Gillian's kick almost trundled
into the net for a dramatic equaliser.
It was not to be however and Falkirk go through to the final.
It turned out a creditable second half performance by Hibs against one of
the League’s stronger and skilful outfits.
